In a landscape shaped by proprietary tools and fragmented standards, PySport and IMPECT are partnering to support a more open and interoperable future for football analytics. This partnership is grounded in shared values - transparency, accessibility, and the belief that collaboration benefits everyone in our community.
In 2014 IMPECT was founded by former Bundesliga players Stefan Reinartz and Jens Hegeler, with the goal of developing football data that you can use to make valuable assessments of players and teams.
Their Packing Model focuses on opponents (and teammates) who are either bypassed by a progressive action, added back into play by a regressive action, removed from defending through a ball win, or added to defending through a ball loss, and their API provides structured access to rich event and context data. impect.com
PySport is a nonprofit open-source community that supports analysts, developers, coaches, and researchers across all sports. The organization's tools, including Kloppy, make sports data easier to work with - streamlining everything from ingestion and transformation to analysis and sharing.
PySport aims to unite the sports analytics community around open-source invasion!
IMPECT's sponsorship enables native Kloppy support for their event data format, currently in development. As PySport's first corporate sponsor, IMPECT is helping fund essential open-source infrastructure for sports analytics. The upcoming Kloppy release will be designated the "IMPECT-Sponsored Release" to recognize this collaboration.
This partnership model โ where companies contribute to open-source development around their own data - is standard practice in cloud and data infrastructure, yet remains rare in sports analytics. Together, PySport and IMPECT are pioneering a more collaborative approach to football data tooling.
This integration reduces friction for analysts, researchers, and developers by eliminating technical barriers between data sources and analytical tools. Whether you're working at a professional club, conducting academic research, or building new applications, streamlined access to IMPECT's data through Kloppy means less time wrestling with data formats and more time generating insights that matter on the pitch.
"Supporting PySport and integrating with Kloppy aligns perfectly with our mission: delivering impactful football data in an open ecosystem," said Stefan Reinartz, Co-Founder of IMPECT. "With more and more professional clubs using open tools like Kloppy, it felt like the right moment to contribute to that ecosystem in a meaningful way."
Koen Vossen, Chair of PySport, added: "IMPECT is our first corporate sponsor. It's encouraging to see a company not only open to collaboration, but actively investing in open-source infrastructure. Partnerships like this show how commercial players and open communities can work together to move the field forward."
The IMPECT integration is currently in development for the upcoming Kloppy release. PySport has updated its website to prominently feature IMPECT as a Game Changer sponsor on our front page.
